Maassen quits Dortmund juniors to take charge of Augsburg
Augsburg confirmed Wednesday that Enrico Maassen will be their head coach next season after plucking the 38-year-old from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.
Maasen has coached Dortmund's Under-23 team for two years, winning promotion in 2020/21 to Germany's third division where they finished ninth last season.
In a statement, Maassen said he is looking forward to the "challenges" ahead and thanked Dortmund for "making this step possible for me".
Augsburg have reportedly paid Dortmund a transfer fee of 300,000 euros ($321,994).
This will be Maassen's first job as head coach in the Bundesliga as he replaces Markus Weinzierl, who quit at the end of last season when his contract expired.
"We have followed Enrico Maassen's development over the past few years because he's a young coach who's hungry for success," said Augsburg sports director Stefan Reuter.
Augsburg finished 14th last season after avoiding relegation to guarantee a 12th straight year in Germany's top flight.
The Bavarian club's highest placing in the Bundesliga was fifth at the end of the 2014/15 season.
